Soft, fluffy, and so cheerful — just like a real cloud! This simple cotton wool craft for the cloud and rainbow is one of the most beloved activities for young children. It develops the sense of touch, patience, and fine motor skills — and the result is so adorable you'll want to hang it everywhere!
What You'll Need
- Printed template (below)
- Cotton wool
- Glue (preferably a glue stick or white school glue)
- Markers for the rainbow
- Optional: blue paper for background, ribbon for hanging, glitter for raindrops
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 — Print the Template Download and print the free template onto card, or glue the paper onto card for a more durable result.
Step 2 — Apply the Glue Spread glue over the entire surface of the cloud. For younger children, an adult can help with this step.
Step 3 — Stick on the Cotton Wool This is where the magic begins! The child takes small pieces of cotton wool and sticks them all over the surface. They can stretch them slightly for a more airy texture, or leave them round and fluffy.
Step 4 — Add the Rainbow Colours Colour in the rainbow with the help of Mum, Dad, or their teacher. The rainbow comes to life!
Step 5 — Hang It Up! Thread a ribbon through the top and hang it in the bedroom, by the window, or in the classroom.
Variations & Ideas Try making grey clouds with darker cotton wool, or paint the cotton wool with tempera for seasonal clouds! You can also add blue card or glitter raindrops for a sparkling effect. Combine it with the rainbow craft for a wonderful sky scene!
